Tricks and Treats of 2010

October came and went quickly in our house this year. It always seems like the whole month is just a build up for that one last big night. We did things a little differently this since Halloween fell on a Sunday but still had so much fun and some would even say we had more fun than usual!

Of course there was pumpkin carving! Ben even decided to get in on the gut scooping this year. I think the jack-o-lanterns turned out pretty cute too. Unfortunately, in our excitement to get them carved, we didn't wait quite long enough and they were a little sad looking by the time Halloween arrived. We only carved them 4 days before Halloween but that's how short a Jack-o-lanterns life span is here in San Antonio.

On the Friday before Halloween our ward had it's annual Trunk-or-treat and chili cook off. After much debate we decided that we would ask the kids not to trick-or-treat on Sunday. Sam wasn't thrilled with the idea but understood why we were asking so he went along with it, being promised that he would get plenty of candy at the church (which he did) and a special spooky dinner on Sunday night. Poor Audrey wasn't feeling well and had missed school the day of the trunk-or-treat but was determined to go anyway. Despite that, she was a beautiful princess and managed to have fun and get a big bag of candy too. Sam was the most handsome Harry Potter that I have ever seen. He was insistent on having dark hair like Harry so we sprayed his hair black for the night and he looked awesome! Ben was a cowboy and had so much fun going around to all the cars repeating "teet teet teet" until candy was dropped into his bag.

On Sunday night we had the promised "spooky" dinner. On the menu were, mummy hot dogs, bone breadsticks, fingers (carrots) dipped in ranch and bloody punch with a severed hand floating in it. For dessert we had caramel apples, oreo eyeballs and spider web cupcakes (I went a little overboard). We ate by candle light and waited for the trick-or-treaters to arrive. Once the doorbell started to ring the kids had SO much fun. Sam even went so far as to say that giving out the candy was more fun than trick-or-traeting because he got to see all of the cool costumes. I was so happy that they enjoyed themselves so much. I'm not sure how we'll top this next year.
